Er liegt auf einer Anhöhe mit einem höchsten Punkt von bis zu 31 Metern über NN und ist Teil des Landschaftsschutzgebiets Schobüller Berg sowie seit 1974 als Erholungswald erklärt. Der Wald wurde Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts angelegt, nachdem der ursprüngliche Wald im Mittelalter abgeholzt worden war und eine Heidelandschaft entstand. Er bietet schmale Reit- und Wanderwege durch einen wildreichen Mischwald und offene Heideflächen.
